Chicken Wire/
Poultry Netting fence fabric intended for enclosure of poultry, or to prevent entry into special areas, consisting of a mesh of woven wire with openings hexagonal in shape.
It is a mesh of wire commonly used to fence in fowl, such as chickens, in a run or coop. It is made of thin, flexible, galvanized steel wire with hexagonal gaps. Available in 1/2 inch (1.3 cm), 1 inch (2.5 cm) diameter, and 2 inch (5 cm), chicken wire is available in various gauges-usually 19 gauge (1 mm) to 22 gauge (0.7 mm). Chicken wire is occasionally used to build inexpensive pens for small animals (or to protect plants and property from animals) though the thinness and zinc content of galvanized wire may be inappropriate for animals prone to gnawing and will not keep out predators.
The style is as designated by part numbers shown in below.

The mesh may be further strengthened by addition of straight line wires spaced approximately 12 in. (305 mm) apart, except spaced at approximately 6-in. (152-mm) intervals for 12 and 18-in. (305 and 457-mm) netting heights.
All rolls of chicken wire/poultry netting fence fabric shall be billed to him on the basis of the number and original length of the rolls Poultry netting covered by this specification shall be furnished in 150 ft (46 m) rolls.
In construction, chicken wire is used as a metal lath to hold cement or plaster, a process known as stuccoing. Concrete reinforced with chicken wire or
Hardware Cloth yields ferrocement, a versatile construction material.
Characteristics
- Material: Chicken wire is typically made from thin, flexible galvanized steel wire, which provides durability and rust resistance. It features hexagonal gaps that vary in size, commonly available in ½ inch, 1 inch, and 2 inch diameters.
- Gauge: The wire comes in various gauges, with 19 gauge (about 1 mm) to 22 gauge (about 0.7 mm) being the most common.
- Flexibility: Its lightweight and flexible nature allows it to be easily shaped for various applications.
Uses
- Poultry Enclosures: Primarily used to create runs or coops for chickens and other small animals, chicken wire effectively keeps the birds contained while allowing for ventilation.
- Garden Protection: It serves as a barrier to protect gardens from small animals such as rabbits and birds. The mesh size can be selected based on the type of pests being deterred.
- Construction: In construction, chicken wire is utilized as a metal lath for stucco applications and can reinforce concrete structures when combined with cement, forming a material known as ferrocement.
- Crafts and Art: It is also popular in arts and crafts for creating sculptures and floral arrangements due to its malleability.
